it belongs. 칼을 뽑아 들자, 신비의 소리가 울렸지 뭡니까. Words are not enough to describe. 한번 직접 보셔야 하는 건데. I should’ve brought it to show you. 우리 같은 촌놈이야, 평생토록 구경도 한번 해보기 힘든 검이었소.”
“Oh my Goodness! 그런 인물이 어찌 골짜기에 처박혀서 돗자리나 짜며 썩고 있었을까. If you were in his shoes, what would you do?”
관우 did not believe what 장비 told him. 오히려 빈정대는 투였다. But 장비 could not get away from his excitement.
“Can’t you trust me? 당장 달려가 한번 만나 보시구려. Oh my God! You just drive me crazy.”
장비는 살짝 약이 올랐다. 관우형님의 태도가 영 맘에 들지 않았기 때문이었다.
Three days later, 태양이 서산아래로 떨어질 참이었다. 관우와 장비는 술과 안주를 챙겨서 유비의 집에 들이닥쳤다.
“Is anybody home?”
장비 knocked on the door, but no one answered. 송아지 크기만한 개만이 달려나와 으르렁대며 노려볼 뿐이었다.
“Is anybody home?”
장비가 다시 소리를 쳤다. 그제서야, 안에서 인기척이 들려왔다.
“Who is it? Anybody out there?”
돗자리를 짜느라 정신을 쏟고 있던 유비가 튀어나와 눈을 비비며 주위를 살폈다.
“Oh, good to see you again.”
유비는 관우와 장비를 반갑게 맞았다.
“I brought my brother over.”
장비가 관우를 소개했다. 관우 knelt down and bowed to 유비.
“I’ve heard a lot about you. I’m 관우 from 하동.”
황소 눈알처럼 번들거리는 두 눈동자에 긴 수염을 한 관우는 얼른 보기에도 예사롭지 않은 인물이었다.
“I’m 유비, having lived in this village for many years. I’m really glad to meet you two great men.”
유비는 관우의 손을 굳게 잡았다. 그들의 얼굴에는 따스한 기운이 감돌았다. They were all full of joy.
It was getting darker into the night. 하늘에는 별들이 총총 빛나고, 멀리서 들려오는 황하의 물줄기는 은은한 클래식 음악이 되어 여유롭게
흘러가고 있었다. 부엌에서 일하시는 유비 어머니의 도마소리는 한판의 풍악이었다.
A little while later, 유비’s mother brought some food over to the three men.
“I’m sure you’re all hungry. Help yourself.”
영웅호걸들은 하던 얘기를 잠시 멈추고, 유비의 어머니에게 감사의 말씀을 드렸다. Thereafter, the three wined and dined all night long. In fact, 유비’s mother offered them a red-carpet reception. 유비는 홀어머니와 골짝에 처박혀 숨어 지내온 심중의 이야기를 허심탄회하게 털어놓았다. He had seldom talked about it to others.
밤이 깊어가고 개구리의 합창소리 또한 드높았다. 관우와 장비는 유비의 이야기에 맞장구를 치며 즐거워했다. Both of them were all ears to 유비. 정의를 향한 그들의 가슴은 뜨겁게 달아올랐다. They all agreed to work for the country and its people.
“우리들의 만남은 단순한 골목대장들의 회합이 아니오. Our meeting is so meaningful that we can do whatever we wanna do. 똘똘 뭉쳐서 적을 아낌없이 쳐부수어 버립시다. That is the name of
our game, isn’t it?”
영웅호걸들의 눈동자는 광채를 더해갔다. 불의를 분쇄할 정의의 눈빛이었다. 유비의 노모는 두 호걸과 아들의 이야기를 잠자코 듣고만 있었다. She was impressed with the young men’s passion to save
the country. 그녀의 양볼에는 하염없는 눈물이 흘러내렸다. 억울하게 돌아가신 하늘에 계신 조상님들이 다시 떠올랐기 때문이었다.
It was around midnight. 훤하게 비추어 주던 보름달은 산너머로 퐁당하고 말았다.
“Bravo! Bravo! Bravo!”
세 장수는 술을 주거나 받거니 하면서 시간 가는 줄 몰랐다. 노모는 호걸들을 향해 말했다.
“Do you want more food?”
“Yes, mother. It’s still a young night, haha. We’re gonna drink all night long.”
“All night? Just don’t get too drunk, okay?”
어머니는 세 장수들의 과음이 염려되기도 했지만, 그들이 즐거워하는 것을 보고는 술상 차리기를 마다하지 않았다. 상다리가 폭삭할 지경으로
상위에는 갖가지 음식이 가득 차려졌다. For her age, she was still very healthy and active.
A couple of hours later, 노모는 유비를 보면서 말했다.
“Son, it’s time for bed. This is the last round, alright?”
“Yes, mother.”
“Let’s have a toast to our success.”
세 장수들의 외침은 맹수들의 포효 마냥 산천초목을 울리고 천지를
요동치게 했다.
“Bottoms up. This is the last round.”
“You bet. We’ve had enough.”
그들은 술잔을 비우고 입술을 훔쳤다.
“어서 두 분의 잠자리를 펴드리도록 해라.Tomorrow, I’ll throw another big party for all three of you.”
멀리서 새벽을 알리는 수탉소리가 어둠을 뚫고 울려 퍼지기 시작했다. 유비 집에서도 수탉이 새벽을 알렸다. “Cock-a-doodle-doo!”
Everybody was sleepy.
“Thanks a lot, mother. 어머님의 뜻을 받들어 큰일을 꼭 해내겠습니다. 저희들은 한다면 하는 배짱이 있습니다. We’ll do our best. Victory will be ours for sure.”
관우와 장비는 유비 어머니에게 고마움을 표하고, 다음 날을 기약하며 잠을 청했다.
“Night-night. Have a good sleep, mother.”
Morning arrived. 부엌에서 보리쌀 씻는 소리가 들려왔다. 관우 and 장비 woke up. They both had a slight hangover. 하지만 얼른 일어나 밖으로 뛰쳐나갔다. 짙은 안개가 장막을 드리우고 있었다.
There were already many people outside, looking busy. Seemingly all the villagers had come over to help.
태양도 이부자리를 걷고 기지개를 펴고 있었다. 짙은 안개는 감쪽같이 사라지고 태양은 더욱 선명한 자태를 드러냈다. 관우와 장비는 사립문을 나와 양지 밭으로 올라갔다. “The peach flowers were in full bloom, and their fragrance was out of this world. 유비 was setting up an altar in the middle of the peach field.
“What are you doing?” said 관우.
“천지신명께 축원을 드리기 위해 재단을 준비하고 있어.”
“Where is mother now? I wonder if she got some sleep last night” asked 장비.
“She’s cooking in the kitchen. When I got up, she was already up. 마을주민들을 불러모으고 계셨지요.”
관우와 장비는 눈을 비비며 눈곱(sleep)을 닦아내고 있었다.
“What are we supposed to do?” said 관우.
“Nothing. Everything’s set. 개울에 가서 목욕이나 하고 오시오” said 유비 standing and stretching.
관우와 장비는 물소리를 따라 개울로 향했다. 차가운 강바람이 세차게 불어왔다. They got to the stream and took off their clothes. 장비가 먼저 물속으로 첨벙 뛰어들었다.
“Wow, it’s freezing. We might catch a cold.”
장비 was not expecting the water that cold. 관우도 물속으로 뛰어들었다. Though it was icy cold, he did not freak out much like
장비 and calmly poured water all over his body.
After taking their bath, they headed back to the altar. 여전히 일꾼들의 일하는 소리가 왁자지껄하게 들려왔다.
“How was the bath, guys?” asked 유비.
“Great! Now I feel so refreshed” replied 장비.
유비’s mother and the village women placed the food, meat, fruits, fish, and cake on the altar. 동네청년들은 술단지를 짊어지고 왔다.
Just overnight, 유비의 어머니가 마련한 요리는 태산처럼 많은 양이었다. 대형제단 위에
차려진 음식의 종류와 양만 봐도 마을사람은 처음 보는 광경이었다. 딱 벌어진 돼지아가리는 창공을 향해 빙긋이 웃고 있었다. Incredible!
마을주민들은 일을 끝내고 집으로 돌아갔다.
“All set. Now let’s pray for all that we’re going to do.”
유비의 어머니가 세 장수를 향해 말했다.
All of them knelt before the altar and prayed for the country.
“천지신명이시여, please bless and help us with our dreams. 부디 저희들이 힘을 합쳐 나라와 국민을 해치는 악당들을 물리치고 어려움에 처한 나라와 겨레를 구할 수 있도록 인도하여 주시옵소서!”
순간 whirlwind(회오리 바람)이 한바탕 거세게 일었다. Peach flowers spread all over. 세 장수의 간절한 소망을 알아들었다는 천지신명의
신호였으리라. Everybody believed that it was a good sign for their future dreams.
관우가 입을 열었다.
“세 사람이면 만리장성을 쌓는다고 했소. Now it is our turn to build a great wall. Firstly, we need a leader.”
“That’s right. I don’t think that’s a problem. 당연히 황족 혈통이며 최고 연장자이신 유공이 우두머리(boss)가 되어야 하지 않겠소.”
장비가 거들었다. 관우도, 유비에게 눈길을 돌렸다. As if he was implying 유비 to answer. 유비 looked rather serious with his eyes closed. 관우와 장비는 잠자코 유비의 답변을 기다렸다.
“That’s not quite right. I cannot be a leader just because I am the oldest. 한나라 황실의 피가 흐르고 있음은 사실이긴
하지만. That’s not enough, is it? 배운 학문이 있나, 하다못해 이장 벼슬도 못되는 초라한 돗자리장수가 우두머리가 된다면 비웃을 자가 어디 한 둘이 아닐 것이오. Let’s just sleep on it.”
유비의 말을 듣고 난 뒤, 두 장수는 목청을 돋웠다.
“무슨 귀신 나락 까먹는 소리를 그렇게 하오? Not fair. 유공은 황실의 피를 이어받은 인물이 아니오.”
“If you don’t feel good about it, 우리 세 사람이 의형제를 맺어 아래 위를 정하는 게 어떻겠소?”
“That sounds good.”
관우와 장비는 선뜻 동의했다. 나이의 순으로 형과 아우를 따져보니, 유비, 관우, 장비의 순이었다.
“I told you. The result is the same.”
막내가 된 장비의 말이었다.
세 장수는 다시 제단으로 나아갔다. They all knelt and bowed together before the altar, swearing brotherhood.
“Though we were not born on the same day, we vow to die together on the same day.”
나라와 민족을 위해 함께 최선을 다해 노력할 것을 굳게 다짐했다. 관우가 유비를 향해 농담조로 말했다.
“From now on, 형님이 농땡이(naughty boy) 장비를
책임지시구려.”
“What’s the matter? He looks like a good boy, doesn’t he? 멀쩡한 사람을 두고서, 하하.”
“실은 형편없는 인간이요. He is a heavy drinker. 술만 들어갔다 하면 정신줄이 끊어지고도 합니다.”
관우의 말에 장비가 받아쳤다.
“Don’t worry. 유비형님이 아마 술을 더 많이 사주시지 않을까 생각합니다. In the meantime, I’ll watch my behavior and try not to cause any more trouble. Just stop teasing me, will you?”
세 형제의 호탕한 laughter(웃음)이 산천을 뒤흔들었다. It continued all night long. 의형제가 된 기쁨을 술잔에 담아 새벽을 밝혔다.
“Cock-a-doodle-doo”.
삼형제는 장차 해야 할 일에 대해 전심전력을 기우려야 했다. 생사 고락을 함께 하기로 한 의형제가 아닌가. Mostly, they needed soldiers, horses, clothes, and food. 머리를 맞대고 궁리했다.
The next morning, 유비’s mother came over to them.
“Good morning, everyone. You all look rather tired and unhappy. 얼굴을 좀 펴야 되겠네. Any problem?”
세 형제는 일어나 노모에게 인사를 올렸다. 노모는 치마 밑에서 뭔가를 슬며시 끄집어 냈다.
“I’m sure you need money – not much, but this should help with food and clothes. 우선 아쉬운 대로 쓰도록 해.”
유비의 어머니는 정성스레 모아둔 쌈짓돈과 패물까지도 아낌없이 내놓으셨다.
“Wow! It’s so heavy that I can’t even move it”.
장비가 무겁다는 시늉을 하며 playfully(장난스럽게) 들어올렸다. 유비 did not know that his mother had saved that much money and collected
valuables. 외아들만 믿고 평생을 살아오신 어머님의 깊으신 뜻에 유비는 눈시울이 뜨거워졌다.
“형님, this will do for the time being. Let’s get to work.”
관우가 유비를 쳐다보며 말했다.
Day broke. 세 형제들은 이른 아침부터 마을을 돌아다니며, 장정들을 모을 생각이었다. 대자보를 붙이고 지나가는 젊은이들을 붙잡아서 설득하는 일을 해야 했다.
“Hello young fellows, 우린 나라와 민족을 구하기 위해 기꺼이 몸을 바칠 용맹스러운 장정들을 모으고 있습니다. Please come on out and join us.”
대자보를 보자마자 젊은 혈기의 장정들이 앞다투어 몰려드는 게 아닌가. 힘을 모아 도적떼를 무찌르겠다는 뜻에 감동했던 것이다. Within a few
hours, almost a few hundred joined.
장비 was in charge of the basic training for the new comers. 장정들을 모아놓고 훈시(instructions)를 했다.
“Listen up. All of you should obey the rules.
우리의 적은 도적떼 (rioters)들이다. 놈들은 국민의 피를 빨아먹고 국가를 병들게 하고 있다. Now we all should work together to get rid of them. 우선 우리의 의병은 용맹해야 한다. If anybody is against the rules, he’ll be punished. 자신 없으면,
지금이라도 늦지 않으니 집으로 돌아가라. Everybody got that?”
“Yes, sir.”
장정들의 우렁찬 함성에 태양도 달랑댈 지경이었다. The young men’s morale went up high. 이윽고 hard training(고된 훈련)과 starving(배고픔)이 시작되었다. But nobody complained. 오히려
훈련병들은 나라와 민족을 위한 참전에 기쁨을 표했다.
A couple of months had passed. 병사들의 훈련은 어지간히 만족스러운 단계가 되었다. 하지만 적의 피를 구경도 하기전에 군량미가 떨어질 판이었다. 아직도 산 넘어 산이요, 강 건너 강이었다. 아무리 군졸들의 사기가 하늘을 찔러댄다고 해도 무기와 말이 없으면 지게 작대기 없는 지게나 다름없는 게 아닌가. The truth was that they did not have
enough horses and weapons. That was not all. Their money was running short, too.
잡다한 근심거리로 세 형제의 얼굴에는 먹구름이 끼었다. Weapons with no horses would not work, either. 미친 듯 사방팔방 날뛰는 놈들을
때려잡기 위해서는 기동성이 절실히 필요했다.
“To begin with, forty or fifty horses won’t be bad.”
관우 sighed. Right then, 장비 hurriedly got back.
“형님, 말 걱정은 하지 않아도 될 것 같아. I know how to get them.”
“What are you saying? Are you pulling my leg or what?”
“Horses are coming. Look.”
장비가 관우를 보며 탄성을 질렀다.
“What are you talking about?”
유비와 관우도 달려나갔다. They looked up closely at what 장비 pointed.
장비 was right. 말 떼들이 몰려오고 있었다. Well, there are no free lunches. They must all belong to someone. 말 떼 뒤에 터벅터벅 걸어오고 있는 자가 있었다. 유비와 관우는 실망하여 고개가 축 늘어졌다.
“I’ll go out and get’em all. Who’s gonna stop me? 나라와 국민의 뒷바라지를 위해 쓰겠다는데. 안 그래요, 형님?”
장비가 부리나케 뛰쳐나갔다. At that moment, 유비 called out to 장비.
“Please, come back. 허튼 짓 하지 말자. 지금 우리가 하는 일은 국민과 나라를 위함이 아니냐? We must fight against the enemy, not against our people. 만약 우리가 국민의 property(재물)을 함부로 빼앗는다면 우리에 대한 그들의 실망이 대단할 거야.”
관우 kept quiet for a while. 잠시 후, 본인이 직접 총대를 매겠다고 나섰다.
“형님, I’ll go and tell them what we’re gonna do. 그들도 우리가 하고자 하는 일을 이해하게 된다면, 함부로 거절은 하지 못할겁니다. They might even help us. Who knows?”
유비는 관우의 제의를 냉정하게 거절하지 못하고 고개만 끄덕일 뿐이었다.
관우는 얼른 달려갔다.
“Gentleman, I have a big favor to ask of you.”
관우는 깍듯이 인사를 건네고, 딱한 사정을 말장수에게 전했다. 그러나 말장수의 태도는 예상밖이었다.
“Get the hell out of here. 이놈이 죽을라꼬 날 받아놨나. 무슨 썩어빠진 개소릴 하고 있어.”
The horse owner got infuriated and smacked 관우 with a whip. 그러더니 차고 있던 칼까지 빼드는 게 아닌가.
“I don’t want to fight with you, sir. Please, put that back, will you?”
관우는 시퍼런 칼날 앞에서 동요하지 않고 사정조로 다시 말했다. 하지만 말 장수는 여전히 냉랭한 어투였다.
“What do you want from me? I have no money. Only horses. 배가 고파서 말고기를 먹겠다는 거야?”
“To be honest with you, we need horses.”
“So what? I don’t care. 땀을 흘려야 말새끼가 생기든지, 소새끼가 생기든지, 하다못해 쥐새끼라도 생길 게 아닌가. 땀 한 방울 흘리지 않고 남의 것을 함부로 뺏으려고 감히? 밤낮으로 고스톱, 대마초, 양주에다 계집들과 빈둥대는 썩어빠진 놈들이
말이야. No pain, no gain.”
The horse owner was about to swing his sword at 관우. 관우 일행을 도적떼로 오해한 듯했다. 관우 did not stop begging. 하지만 말주인은 여전히 냉랭한 표정으로 관우를 밀어제쳤다. 관우는 찬찬히 부드러운 어조로 거듭 사정을 설명했다. 무엇보다도 나라와 백성을 구한다는 명분을 강조했다. Now
the man paid attention to 관우. 관우의 예의와 태도가 예사롭지 않음을 눈치 챈 것이었다.
“Oh, really? I totally misunderstood you then. 그런 훌륭한 뜻을 갖고 계신다면 말이 문제겠어요. 당장 역적놈들을 잡아 껍데기를 벗겨 나무에 매달아 버립시다. 저도 천날 만날 도적떼들에게 당해서 이를 갈고 있다오.”
말주인은 관우의 말을 듣고 나서 흥분된 어조였다.
“In fact, I lost many horses to the rioters.”
“How many?”
“Around a couple of thousands. Can you believe it?”
“Holy cow! That’s a lot.”
말주인은 이번에도 사업차 떠났지만 도적떼들의 갑작스러운 기습공격으로 손해만 보고 계획을 포기한 채 돌아가던 참이었다. 장세평이라고 했다. He must be a big cheese(거물) in the horse business.
